จากกลุ่มคนกลุ่มหนึ่งซึ่งมีใจรักในศิลปะการถ่ายภาพ รวมตัวกันก่อตั้งสมาคมถ่ายภาพแห่งประเทศไทยขึ้น ประกอบด้วยนายรัตน์ เปสตันยี, ม.ร.ว.จักรทอง ทองใหญ่, เจ้ากาวิละวงศ์ ณ เชียงใหม่, นายที.เอ็ม. คริสเตียนเสน ฯลฯ จัดตั้งเป็นสมาคมฯ ที่สมบูรณ์ตามกฎหมายในปี พ.ศ. 2502

ภายหลังจากที่ได้ก่อตั้งสมาคมฯ ได้เพียงปีเดียว ทางผู้บริหารสมาคมฯ ชุดนี้ ได้กราบบังคมทูล ขอพระราชทานพระมหากรุณาธิคุณจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ให้ทรงรับสมาคมฯ เข้าอยู่ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ โดยนายรัตน์ เปสตันยี นายกสมาคมฯ ม.ร.ว.จักรทอง ทองใหญ่ และเจ้ากาวิละวงศ์ ณ เชียงใหม่ อุปนายก ได้ทำหนังสือกราบบังคมทูลขอพระราชทาน และในปี พ.ศ. 2504 ทางสมาคมฯ ก็ได้รับหนังสือจากสำนักราชเลขาธิการ ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาต

ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2515 เพื่อเป็นการบันทึกประวัติสมาคมฯ ในการขอพระราชทานให้สมบูรณ์ยิ่งขึ้น นายพูน เกษจำรัส ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นนายกสมาคมฯ นายจิตต์ จงมั่นคง และ ร.ต.กระจ่าง พงศ์ไทย ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นอุปนายก ได้ทำหนังสือขอพระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เชิญพระมหามงกุฏไปประดับตราเครื่องหมายสมาคมถ่ายภาพแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ซึ่งได้มีจดหมายตอบพระราชทานจากสำนักราชเลขาธิการในปีเดียวกัน

สมาคมฯ จึงได้อัญเชิญตราพระมหามงกุฏไปประกอบเป็นเครื่องหมาย ซึ่งอาจารย์ไพฑูรย์ โอศิริ เป็นผู้ออกแบบตราสัญลักษณ์ โดยสมาคมฯ มีชื่อเต็มว่า “สมาคมถ่ายภาพแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์” ใช้ชื่อย่อภาษาไทยว่า “ส.ภ.ท.” ใช้ชื่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า The Photographic Society of Thailand under royal patronage of H.M. the King” ชื่อย่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า “PST” มีตราสมาคมฯ เป็นรูป “ราหูอมจันทร์ ภายใต้มงกุฏครอบ” มีลักษณะเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้าตามขวาง ส่วนกลางเป็นรูปราหูอมจันทร์ล้อมกรอบด้วยวงกลม ซึ่งแสดงถึงลูกนัยน์ตาดำ ภายนอกนัยน์ตาดำคือรูปนัยน์ตาขาว นอกรูปดวงตาเป็นเนื้อที่ที่เหลือภายนอกในกรอบสี่เหลี่ยม ซึ่งแบ่งเป็นส่วนเท่ากัน รูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้านี้มีมงกุฏครอบอยู่เบื้องบน ในระยะแรกสมาคมฯ ได้มีการเลือกตั้งนายกฯ และคณะกรรมการบริหารสมาคมฯ ทุกๆ หนึ่งปี จนถึงในปี พ.ศ. 2518 ได้มีมติแก้ไขข้อบังคับให้คณะกรรมการบริหารสมาคมฯ แต่ละคณะดำรงตำแหน่งได้คราวละ 2 ปีต่อเนื่องกัน จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2541 ได้มีมติในที่ประชุมสมัยวิสามัญให้แก้ไขกฎข้อบังคับหลายข้อ ซึ่งข้อที่สำคัญที่สุดคือ การเลือกนายกสมาคมฯ แต่เพียงท่านเดียว แล้วให้นายกสมาคมฯ สรรหากรรมการที่มีความรู้ความสามารถมาเป็นคณะกรรมการบริหาร

ในปี พ.ศ. 2551 สมาคมฯ ได้ขอจดทะเบียนแก้ไขชื่อของสมาคมฯ เป็น “สมาคมถ่ายภาพแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์” ใช้ชื่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า The Royal Photographic Society of Thailand” ใช้ชื่อย่อภาษาไทยว่า “ส.ภ.ท.” ใช้ชื่อย่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า “RPST” โดยมีตราสมาคมฯ เป็นรูปราหูอมจันทร์ ภายใต้มงกุฎครอบเช่นเดิม

ตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบันเป็นเวลากว่า 60 ปี สมาคมถ่ายภาพแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ มีนายกสมาคมฯ สืบเนื่องกันมา 18 ท่าน และมีผลงานออกมาอย่างสม่ำเสมอ ทั้งในการสร้างบุคลากร และการกระตุ้นให้เกิดมาตรฐานในวิชาชีพภาพถ่าย โดยการจัดสอบเกียรตินิยมภาพถ่าย การประกวดภาพถ่าย การจัดอบรมเสวนาให้ความรู้เชิงเทคนิค วิชาการ การจัดนิทรรศการภาพถ่ายในหลากหลายวาระ รวมถึงการจัดกิจกรรมในเชิงสันทนาการ เช่น การจัดกิจกรรมพบปะแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็น การจัดทริปถ่ายภาพตามสถานที่ต่างๆ และการช่วยเหลืองานสังคมทั้งของหน่วยงานรัฐ และเอกชน ซึ่งผลงานเหล่านี้ล้วนเป็นกระบวนการที่สมาคมฯ ให้ความสำคัญ ทั้งนี้เพื่อนำไปสู่เป้าหมายในการขับเคลื่อนพัฒนาวงการถ่ายภาพไทย

ปัจจุบันสมาคมฯ ยังคงดำเนินการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานอย่างต่อเนื่องให้สมกับที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงพระกรุณารับสมาคมฯ ไว้ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์

History of the Royal Photographic Society of Thailand
Many years ago a group of photography enthusiasts joined together to establish a society of photography for Thailand. the photographers included Mr. Rat Pestanyee, M.C. Jakthong Thongyai, Prince Kavilawong na Chiengmai and Mr. T.M. Christiansen. The society was officially registered on January 8 in 1959.

Within just one year, the executive board of this society requested royal patronage from H.M. King Bhumipol Adulyadej. Mr. Rat Pestanyee, the society president, M.C. Jakthong Thongyai, the society’s vice-president and Prince Kavilawong na Chiengmai, another vice-president, sent an official letter to H.M. the King, asking kindly for his royal patronage. In the year of 1961, the society received an official letter from the Bureau of the General Secretary to H.M. the King, Confirming H.M. the permission for his royal patronage.

To perfect the society’s establishment, in 1972, Mr. Poon Kesjamrus, the society’s president, Jit Jongmankong and Captain Krajang Pongthai, vice-president, requested the King’s permission to include the grand crown in the society’s symbol. Then later in the same year, the Bureau of the General Secretary to the King sent a letter to confirm H.M. the King permission.

The grand crown then was added in the society’s symbol. Ajarn Phaitoon Osiri designed the original symbol with its full title as the Photographic Society of Thailand under royal patronage of H.M. the King, with PST as an anagram. The society’s symbol is the image of the Rahu swallowing the Moon (the Hindu mythical deity of lunar eclipse) under the grand crown. The overall symbol is composed within a horizontal rectangle, with the Rahu swallowing the Moon in the middle of a circle: signifying an eye. The rest of the rectangle is divided into two horizontal parts. On top of this rectangle is the grand crown.

At the beginning, the member of the society’s executive board were elected annually. In the year of 1975, the society’s rules were changed so that the elected members remained on the society’s executive board for two consecutive years. On the special general assembly in 1998, the society’s rules were again revised but the most prominent act was the agreement that the society would elect a president, who would be responsible in selecting qualified persons to work as part of the society’s executive board. In 2008, the society officially registered their new name as The Royal Photographic Society of Thailand, with RPST as its anagram, and the same symbol of the Rahu swallowing the Moon under the grand crown.

In the past 60 years, there have been 18 presidents of the Royal Photographic of Thailand, under the royal patronage of H.M. the King. RPST has consistently produced substantial works. This includes developing profession by establishing the standard of photographer’s profession, organizing photography accreditation, creating photography competitions, launching seminars about photographic knowledge and techniques, hailing regular photography exhibitions, and also other activities such as group discussions and photography outing and social aid activities both for civic and private sectors. These works are continual actions leading to a goal that RPST strives in driving Thai photography forward, to reach up to eminence of a society under the Royal Patronage of H.M. the King.
